When I'm not immersed in the world of design, I find joy in a range of creative activities. From painting and pottery to engaging in epic D&D adventures, these outlets fuel my imagination and allow me to express myself. Nature serves as a constant source of inspiration for me, reminding me of the vastness of the world and our place within it. A nature walk is my favorite passtime. Coming from a Fine Art background, I also have a deep appreciation for museums, where I get to travel back in time and explore the wonders of art and culture.

The Raw Magazine

Project Background

In the last decade, stacks of new erotic independent magazines have been finding their way to bedside tables, with the aim to inspire curiosity and exploration. The Raw Magazine is setting out to subvert sexual stereotypes, whether by challenging censorships; creating space for queer, non-conforming, and female expression; providing readers with honest and relatable depictions of sexuality.

Goals

The goal is to have a curated collection of thought-provoking articles and captivating photographs that shine a spotlight artists who fearlessly challenge societal normals and pushes the boundaries. In a world where the advocacy of sexuality is gaining momentum, The Raw aims to celebrate and explore this powerful and transformative espect of human espression, and create a platform that encouraegs open conversations, fostering an environment where more and more people feel comfortable and empowered to express their own unique perspectives.

Opportunities

Sexuality is a topic that sometimes can be too taboo to talk about, and it is hard to find publications that represent the fluidity of the spectrum in an artistic way.

Solution

The Raw Magazine sets the goal to celebrate all genders, bodies, beauty types, and preferences through design, editorial layout, and art direction.

Reader Personas

Typography

Headline: Granville and Orpheus, both are high contrast between thick and thin strokes. They were widely-used for signs and posters during the mid 20th century. They are elegant, versatile and modern, very suitable for the topic of this magazine.

Body copy: Proxima Nova, it’s a hybrid of Futura and Akzidenz Grotesk, which combines a geometric appearance with modern proportions. The tall x-height and low contrast strokes provide very good readability even in small font size.

Style & Source of Content

I drew inspiration from publications such as Ladybeard, Riposte, and Math, studied their content and layout, their designs are impactful by using simple layouts, big headlines and images, and a lot of negative space.

This issue is mainly focused on photography and photographers who are advocates of sexual expression. The featured photographers are: Joanne Leah, The Ljilja, Guy Bourdin, Pretty Puke, Ren Hang, and Jo Ann Callis.

The Raw Magazine First Issue

The magazine is divided into 3 sections: Front of the Book are short interviews of artists, the Features section includes longer stories of how featured artist represent sexuality and fluidity in their work, and Back of the Book features short and interesting articles about trends, news, and events that provide resources to people who are seeking support and allyship.

Summary

It took a lot of effort to build a magazine from scratch, and during the process, I have formed a good habit of managing many files by using consistent naming convention, I have also learned to edit documents efficiently in InDesign and how to print and bind my own magazine.
